Media art festivals where buildings become screens and city streets transform into immersive exhibition spaces are held across the globe. You may have heard of Vivid Sydney the Festival of Lights Berlin or Fête des Lumières. Nizhny Novgorod has its own answerand in terms of scale and ambition it stands confidently alongside them. Allow us to introduce Intervals. What is Intervals? Intervals is an international media art festival held annually in Nizhny Novgorod since 2017. It is produced by the acclaimed creative studio dreamlaser with the support of the regional government. In just a few years the festival has evolved into one of the most notable platforms in the global digital art landscape without exaggeration. At the heart of Intervals lies a large-scale multimedia exhibition embedded directly into the urban environment. Building facades public squares interiors and architectural landmarks are transformed into living canvases featuring light installations projection mapping sound design and immersive visual works that redefine how the city is experienced. Most remarkably the entire exhibition is open and free to the public. You simply step outside and find yourself inside a work of art. Beyond the exhibition the festival offers a curated program of concerts audiovisual performances and educational sessions for those interested not only in experiencing the art but in understanding the ideas and technologies behind it. Theme 2026: Sign Symbol Each year Intervals is built around a central theme that unites participating artists. This years concept Sign Symbol explores the city as a layered system of meaning: The festival views the city as an infrastructure of meaning a network of physical and digital signs and symbols that shape perception and collective memory. The artworks intervene in this network reconfigure its connections and create new pathways of perception. In essence the festival invites us to reconsider the symbols that surround us daily. A road sign an architectural ornament a digital interface a city logo these are not mere visual elements but components of a shared language. Intervals challenges us to see and interpret that language anew.
